According to Gallup’s July 2026 Consumption Habits poll, marijuana use among U.S. adults has reached a record high of 17%, matching previous peaks. Meanwhile, cigarette smoking has declined to a record low of 11%, highlighting shifting patterns in adult tobacco and nicotine consumption. This latest survey marks the first time Gallup included nicotine pouch use, which currently stands at 4% among adults.
Age Group Variations in Tobacco and Nicotine Use
The poll reveals notable differences in consumption habits across age groups. Marijuana use is most prevalent among younger adults, with 23% of those aged 18 to 29 and 25% of those aged 30 to 49 reporting marijuana smoking. Cigarette smoking remains highest in the 30 to 49 age bracket at 16%, while vaping is most common among 18- to 29-year-olds at 17%. Nicotine pouch use peaks at 7% among adults aged 30 to 49.
Broader Consumption Trends and Context
Beyond tobacco and nicotine, Gallup’s survey also highlights other lifestyle habits. Coffee remains the most popular non-alcoholic beverage, with 49% of adults consuming it daily. Tea and caffeinated soda each have a daily consumption rate of about 20%, and 9% of adults drink energy drinks daily. Additionally, 5% of Americans identify as vegetarian and 2% as vegan.
These data points reflect evolving consumer preferences and the complex landscape of adult substance use. It is important to note that tobacco and nicotine products, including cigarettes, vaping devices, and nicotine pouches, are age-restricted and harmful.
